Enclosed and Between

Length: 25 minutes; Number of Dancers: 3; Set Design by Oriana Catton.

Enclosed and Between was created as an extension and response to my previous solo work Transparent Objects. The two works are woven together by my use of artist Oriana Catton’s sculptural set design, continued movement explorations investigating forms of feminine expression, and a consideration of the phenomenon of perception in dance, choreography, and performance.

Enclosed and Between seeks to dislodge and relocate the objectifying gaze of the audience by prompting spectators themselves into motion as they view the dance. Rather than being seated throughout the performance, audience members are directed to move continuously through the space. Not only does this mode of mobile spectatorship allow viewers to watch the dance from a variety of perspectives, but, through the lived experience of moving, encourages audience members to consider their own integral role within the performance. Rather than witnesses of the choreography, the role of the audience is shifted to something like accomplices of the choreographic event. Enclosed and Between does not allow audience members to simply observe the performance, but instead passes onto them a portion of responsibility for determining their own perceptive experiences.
