Europa

Length: 15 minutes, No. of Dancers: 1
Set Design by Alaina Wilson

Comprised of a subtle soundscape, delicately crafted set pieces, and an intricate movement vocabulary, Europa is a multidisciplinary solo work that places body and object in direct comparison using dance and sculpture. At its core, the performance is an exercise in self-confrontation. This solo incorporates an installation of wire sculptures, created in tandem with the movement material. Using a devised improvisational score that incorporated the wire, the malleable material was shaped into abstract forms - creating three-dimensional relics of the developing dance work.

Each performance of Europa depicts a layered confrontation between myself, the artist/performer, and the displayed wire objects created during my process. In performance, I orbit around the objects, getting closer and farther away, continually measuring myself against the material. The audience views my continual attempts to re-approach and re-evaluate these objects, which, despite being created by me and occupying the same space as me, have felt as though they grow more and more distant from my personal experience overtime.

The creation of Europa was supported by the the Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation’s Artist In Residency Program.
